Meta's Rebranding of Mixed Reality: A New Era for Immersive Experiences
Feb-26-2025

Meta has expanded the definition of mixed reality to encompass both traditional mixed reality and virtual reality. This shift in terminology was acknowledged by the company's Chief Technology Officer in response to feedback regarding their mixed reality approach.
On the official Meta website, references to virtual reality are largely absent in the context of Quest products. Instead, terms like immersive experiences take precedence. During events like Connect 2025, developers are encouraged to engage with mixed reality rather than virtual reality.
This strategic change has led to some uncertainty among developers and users. There are suggestions that using the term extended reality might better serve the industry, yet Meta appears determined to set itself apart from augmented reality solutions involving glasses, opting to use mixed reality in their formal communications.
It is yet to be determined if the recent terminology will gain widespread acceptance, or if individuals will continue to refer to virtual reality simply as VR.
